Lá na gClub - 19/05/10

The 9th of May proved a very successful day in the annals of Ballyhea GAA. Another fruitful day which will rank amongst the special ones that Ballyhea GAA has had over the past 126 years.

Jimmy Barry Murphy was a very special guest and officially opened the Club museum. He reminded us of many of his exploits and spoke to the children as he encouraged them to ‘live the dream’. Jimmy cut the ribbon to open another chapter in our clubs history. History is alive and tells many stories but many of which are now evident in the museum. Guests also included John Quinn, Club President, Noel O’Riordan, Chairman, Dave Garvey, Juvenile Chairman, Ger O’Shea, Camogie Chairman, Kieran O’Regan, Museum/La nag Club and Fr Downing PP.

The museum was very popular and that is evident from the many names entered in the visitors book. A record for ever. Dave Ryan, Michelle and Bernadette were happy to sign anywhere on the dotted line.

It was a great occasion for those who attended from the parish and further afield. It was an event which was enjoyed by many as it was supported by lots of activities both inside and outside the clubhouse. To Eamonn for the music in the hall ‘Thank You’. Young and Old mingled and danced to the sound of great tunes.

Refreshments were provided by the ladies from the parish under the guidance of Theresa, Kay and Breda and what a job all of those ladies did. Moss, (the hat has to make a reappearance) Denis and Noel were seen outside and proved very handy with the BBQ which went down a treat. Even the stewards were complimented for their organisation skills.

The Ballyhea National School Parents committee proved themselves yet again by hosting their sports day and it buzzed with excitement. The children were certainly enjoying the many fun races that included egg and spoon, three legged races and even a mothers and fathers race. Now, who won that one? Clare prepared fine certificates for all the worthy recipients and did a great job representing the parents on the La na gClub committee.

The Tug o War was overseen by Michael O’Sullivan (brick) assisted by John & Neil Ronan. Now, that was a spectacle in itself with the youth, ladies and Adults all participating. A stewards enquiry is rumoured to go before the executive committee.

The juveniles were enjoying handball, penalty shooting, long puck and were managed under the watchful eye of John, Dave and Ger who also wanted to compete but were ruled offside by the judges (right Willie)!

The school was represented by principal Mrs Ena O’Regan who spoke at her pride in the many children who put in a lot of hard work and along with Dave Garvey and Jimmy Barry Murphy presented awards to the winners of the National school story/poetry/art competition. He was in awe of their effort and commended them all. Every one of the childrens entries were put on display in the hall for all to see and enjoy.

Theresa O’ Mahoney and her dancers provided the dance entertainment which was fantastic. Well done to the children who helped to make it happen. Laura excelled with her dancing display and the Piper in full regalia was exceptional when leading Jimmy Barry Murphy to the stage.

Older members of the club were said to be dashing in their club attire and they included John Quinn, Mick Copps and Eamonn Dundon ( head of security!!). It was great to see so many of our club members and parishioners participating in the days activities. Well Done to all concerned.

By the way, John Quinn and Breda Crowley along with Mick and Bernadette were seen dancing a fine waltz in the hall. Now,that just proves that it was a great occasion and I’m sure if you were there you enjoyed the buzz too. If you weren’t there then you just have to be around for next year and participate in a great day of fun and craic.

Here’s to next year already ....

Club Museum Opening - 13/05/10

Ballyhea GAA Club would like to say a special word of “Thanks” to all of those who attended the ‘La na gClub’ event at the club grounds last Sunday. It was a special occasion which the club celebrated with the opening of its Club Museum. Special thanks to all of those who helped to make it happen.

The club would like to especially mention a number of people who put in Trojan effort for the museum. For Dave Ryan who proved happiest when he had a screwdriver or hammer in his hand. To Breda and Bernadette who brought a sense of occasion to the room. John McCarthy and John Sexton who proved a dab hand at the painting and handiwork. Their skill with the paint brush is a testament to their commitment. For Bernice and Tony who proved very creative in the display area.

The club also acknowledges the jerseys, photos and memorabilia given to the club museum. We are a small club with a great heart and it is great to see the so many enjoy the fruits of the effort made.

To Noel and members of the executive committee along with members of the juvenile and camogie sections of the club for their support and encouragement. If we have forgotten anybody for their work in the museum please take this note as a sincere ‘Thanks’ as we really appreciate your effort. To Jimmy Barry Murphy for coming along and opening the museum which was a great inspiration and we genuinely wish him a sincere ‘Thank You’ for his words and gift to the club. Also to Fr Downing PP who blessed the museum.

To Michelle, Helen, Jerome, Theresa, Deirdre, David, Maura, John M, John C, Pat, Sean, Clare, Ena, Theresa and Breda who also lent a helping hand in the lead up to the opening of the museum. Not forgetting Kieran for his direction and all of those who helped to make the museum happen.
