Minor Results 2003 25/01/04 - Cork County Premier Hurling League Final BALLYHEA 2-12 DOUGLAS 2-11 @ Coachford On Sunday last our minors finished off the year unfortunately as runners-up to Douglas on the slenderest of margins at Coachford after a very close first half in which Neil Buckley scored two marvellous goals within one minute after good work from Maurice O' Sullivan. The teams went in at the half level with the score at Douglas 1-7 Ballyhea 2-4. The second half took up where the first finished with both teams piling on the pressure on each opponents defence but as the final whistle sounded it was to be heartbreak once again as Doglas held on the 1 one point victory. Early goal from Stephen O' Sullivan and Maurice O' Sullivan set the tone and a third from Neil Buckley saw us leading at the break 3-11 to 0-3. The second half saw a fourth gola from Gavin Morrissey and fine points from Maurice O'Sullivan, Barry Coleman, Edward Rea, and John O' Riordan. Ballyhea started the brighter with points from Maurice O' Sullivan and Neil Buckley inside the opening ten minutes. Newtown levelled the tie after 20 mintes of play. Ballyhea goaled before the break from corner forward David O' Riordan to give them a three point advantage at the break. In a closly fought second half Newtown raised their game hitting some long range points and excellent frees. Some wayward shooting from Ballyhea allowed Newtown to drift into a 4 point lead approaching the full time whistle to give Newtown a well deserved victory. Both sides exchanged two early points. Ballyhea gradually settled with Owen O' Sullivan very impressive at midfield along with Neil Buckley and Maurice O' Sullivan in attack and Buckley goaled in the 10th minute after great work by Edward Rea and John O' Riordan 1-2 to 0-3. Both sides added a point before a long Barry Coleman free hit the Valley Rovers upright with the rebound falling to Maurice O' Sullivan who had his sides second goal. The winners added three quick points on the trot to open up a 2-6 to 0-4 lead after 20 minutes. However Valley Rovers clawed their way back and at the break they had reduced our lead to 2-7 to 1-6. In the second half Valley Rovers pressed hard but found our Backline hard to break down. By the end of the 3rd quarter the winners were 2-9 to 1-7 ahead. Valley Rovers were denied a goal in the 50th minute when Danny O' Donoghue saved a close in free. Valley Rovers then added two points to come within a goal 2-9 to 1-9. Both sides added another point before Maurice O' Sullivan scored a great point before the final whistle to set up a final meeting with neighbours Newtown. The South-east side got off to a dream start with a goal from intercounty player Michael Aherne after 5 mins, to lead 1-2 to 0-1. Points from Maurice O' Sullivan (12 min) and Niall Buckley (14 min) left 2 points between the sides. Owen O' Sullivan pointed in the 16th minute and 2 minutes later Niall Buckley goaled from close range as Ballyhea took control. Maurice O' Sullivan had 2 further points and sandwiched in between, John O' Riordan goaled as Ballyhea led 2-7 to -14 at the break. Maurice O' Sullivan pointed in the 32nd min before Ballinhassig had 3 pointed frees to come within 4 points, but Ballyhea took control again with 6 unanswered points to lead 2-14 to 1-7 with 10 minutes remaining. Ballinhassig did have a late goal from a 21 yard free but points from Barry Coleman and Niall Buckley reconsolidated Ballyhea's lead and a meeting with Valley Rovers in the Semi-Final. The home side led 1-1 to 0-3 after 15 mins. Neil Buckley (2nd min) and Owen O' Sullivan (4th and 15th min) scoring for Ballyhea, Midletons goal coming in the 14th min.. Ballyhea had a well taken goal from Stephen O' Sullivan in the 23rd minute. But Midleton goaled again in the 28th min to leave Ballyhea leading by a single point at the break 1-7 to 2-3. The second half was very evenly contested and thanks to the accuracy of Maurice O' Sullivan Ballyhea forced ahead 1-11 to 2-6 with 4 mins remaining. The first half was evenly contested and after 20 mins Ballyhea led by just 2 points 0-4 to 0-1 after playing with a strong wind. But a blistering finish to the half saw Stephen O' Sullivan crack home an excellent goal after good work by John O' Riordan followed by points from Maurice O' Sullivan and an excellent sideline cut from Stephen O' Sullivan. Then a minute before the break Niall Buckley goaled to send us 2-6 to 0-3 clear at the half-time whistle. Ballyhea had early 2nd half points from Edward Rea and Niall Buckley before Newtown were thrown a life line with a goal from a 21 yard free. Ballyhea though replied again with points from Niall Buckley and John O' Riordan. And as conditions got worse Ballyhea finished with a goal from Niall Buckley and two futher points from Nial to run out comfortable winners. Glen Rovers opened brightly with a brace of points but a goal scored by John O'Riordan midway through the first half for the Avondhu side ensured that they went in at the break, leading 1-5 to 0-5, The home side came out for the second half in a determined mood and quickly took the lead with a goal and point from the ever dangerous Barry Hackett. However, Ballyhea seeing the danger again upped their game with Danny O'Donoghue in goal, making a number of important saves. A goal from Gavin Morrissey at the three quarter stage eased their situation but the Glen fought back with some superb points from sub Patrick Horgan. As the result hung on a knife-edge Glen Rovers went in an all-out attack but Ballyhea's defence stood firm and on several occasions denied their opponents an all important goal. Maurice O' Sullivan goals in the 7th and 16th mins helped us to a 2-6 to 0-3 lead at half-time. Town stuck to their task and a goal in the 58th minute reduced Ballyhea's lead to just 2 points, but Ballyhea replied immediately with a brilliant goal from John O' Riordan to seal the points.
