Minor Results 2001 Sunday 24th February 2002 | County Minor "A" League County Final Ballyhea 3-13 Barryroe 1-9 @ Ovens What a way to bring the curtain down on a marvellous season as the minor hurlers added the County League Title to the Championship, with this impressive victory over Barryroe at Ovens on Sunday . Despite the inclement weather the game was played on a bone dry pitch which helped a free flowing game. The West Cork Boys got off to flying start with a goal after 2 mins, followed by a point a min later. Ballyhea were playing against a strong wind in the first half, but pointed frees from Tim Shanahan in the 5th & 12th mins and a point from the excellent Conor O' Riordan in the 14th min left just 1 point between the sides at the end of the first quarter. Barryroe had points in the 16th, 17th and 21st mins to stretch their lead to 4 points, while at the other end their keeper did well to deny Tim Shanahan and Trevor O' Sullivan. Ballyhea finally broke through in the 23rd min when Timmy Shanahan billowed the net from close range. Barryroe added 2 more points while Neil Buckley had a fine kicked point for Ballyhea to leave the score 1-7 to 1-4 at the break. Ballyhea now with the aid of the elements, had points from Neil Buckley (31), Timmy Shanahan (34) and Owen O' Sullivan (36) to draw level. Neil Buckley fired Ballyhea ahead a min later with another well taken point. Maurice O Sullivan pointed spectacularly with 20 mins remaining. Barryroe though kept in touch with a point from their full forward. Then in the 43rd min the Carbery Reps were awarded a penalty but to their anguish the resulting effort went harmlessly wide. Sean Coleman(44) and Neil Buckley(46) added further Ballyhea points and when Timmy Shanahans free with 7 mins remaining went all the way to the net, Ballyhea were on their way to victory. Timmy Shanahan added a further 1-1 and Sean Coleman had the final say with a well taken point to wrap up a fine performance. After the game County Minor Board Chairman Sean Keohane presented the County Minor League trophy to Ballyhea's captain Timmy Shanahan. Sunday 6th January 2002 | County Minor "A" League County Semi-Final Ballyhea 2-5 Iniscarra 2-4 @ Ballyhea In an exciting county MAHL semi-final at Ballyhea, our minors advanced to yet another final with this one point victory over Iniscarra. The game was played in heavy conditions, with both defences playing well. Barry Coleman at centre-back was outstanding during the whole game. The opening score came from Timmy Shanahan in the eight minute. In the 12th minute, Neil Buckley placed Edward Rea in for a point.In the 25th minute, Tim Shanahan scored a goal after good work by Maurice O' Sullivan and Eoin O' Sullivan, leaving the score at 1-3 to 0-0. In the dying moments of the first half, good work by Barry Coleman and Eoin O' Sullivan led to a goal by Neil Buckley. This gave Ballyhea an interval lead of 2-3 to 1-1. The second half was close an tense. Ballyhea scored two points in this half, both by Timmy Shanahan; the first a free in the 35th minute, the second an injury-time free to give Ballyhea the victory. Ballyhea, who had already beaten Inniscarra in the County Championship, had now completed the double over their mid-Cork rivals, and gained a Co. Subs | Mark Curtin, John William O' Brien, Stephen O' Sullivan, Martin O' Keeffe, Frank McNamara, David O' Riordan Sunday 16th December | County Minor "A" League 1/4 Final Replay Ballyhea 4-7 Tracton 2-9 @ Ballyhea The minor hurlers advanced to the "A" County League Semi-Final with this hard earned victory over Tracton at Ballyhea on Sunday. played in bitter cold conditions, nothing sepatated the sides in the first quarter with the sides level 0-2 to 0-2 after 15 mins. Team captain Timmmy Shanahan returning from injury and operating at full forward struck for Ballyheas first goal in the 18th min with a low shot that deceived the visitors keeper. The next ten minutes were evenly contested with Tracton scoring from a free but the Ballyhea defence were standing firm with Barry Coleman and John O' Riordan in terrific form. Two minutes before the break Timmy Shanahan goaled again this time with a rasping shot to the top corner of the net giving the keeper no hope. The score at half-time was 2-3 to 0-4 in favour of Ballyhea. The second half though was just a minute old and a lapse of concentation in the Ballyhea defence left Tracton in for a goal. Barry Coleman though fired over a long range free to put us 3 points clear again 2-4 to 1-4. Tracton took over for the next ten minutes but Ballyhea's backs stood firm and when the ball did go through Danny O' Donoghues handling was excellent. With 15 mins remaining Ballyhea led by just 1 point 2-5 to 1-7 when Sean Coleman linked up with Nial Buckley who finished spectacularly to the roof of the net and this was followed 2 mins later with a goal from Colm Hawe to put Ballyhea 7 points clear with 11 mins left. Tracton pulled a point back a minute later but in the 52 min Trevor O' Sullivan restored our 7 point advantage with a fantastic point from the touchline. Tracton never gave in and a goal and point in 56th and 57th mins had only 3 points between the sides before Timmy Shanahan pointed a free in the final moments to secure Ballyhea's place in the semi-final. Sunday 9th December | County Minor "A" League 1/4 Final Ballyhea 0-12 Tracton 2-6 @ Minane Bridge Ballyhea and Tracton finished all square in the Co. MAHL quarter final last sunday at Minane Bridge. The game was played in dry conditions. The home side got off to a good start with two early points. Ballyhea had thier first point in the ninth minute by Conor O' Riordan. Ballyhea finished the half well having two late points by Trevor O' Sullivan and Conor O' Riordan 1-5 to 0-4 at the break. On the resumption Ballyhea did very well. They had points by Maurice O' Sullivan (2) Colm Hawe and Conor O' Riordan in the 40th minute to force the sides level. Tracton edged ahead again at the end of the third quarter. Ballyhea battled hard and a point from Barry Coleman 65 tied the scores 1-6 to 0-9 with nine minutes remaining. Maurice O' Sullivan edged Ballyhea ahead with a point but a goal for the Tracton side at the end of normal time looked like seeing them advance to the Semi Final. Saturday 3rd November | County Minor "A" Championship Final Replay Ballyhea 4-15 Watergrasshill 2-3 @ Fermoy Ballyhea, at the second time of asking, proved too strong for Watergrasshill in this replayed Cork County Minor "A" Hurling Championship Final at Fermoy on Saturday. In a game which was slow to settle, Ballyhea opened the scoring with a point from Trevor O' Sullivan in the sixth minute. They doubled their advantage with a similar score from Edward Rea in the 20th minute. In the 22nd minute Ballyhea broke through for their first goal when Maurice O' Sullivan's perfect pass found the unmarked Niall Buckley who finished to the net and followed this with a point. A goal and a point from Conor O' Riordan saw them going in at the break leading 2-4 to 0-1 with Watergrasshill's point coming from Eoin O' Reilly. Any hopes of a Watergrasshill comeback was dashed early in the second half by three points from Maurice O' Sullivan (2) and Conor O' Riordan. Kieran O' Leary, Colm Hawe, Barry Coleman, Edward Rea, Maurice O' Sullivan and Niall Buckley were now inspiring their colleagues to greater heights, resulting in another brace of points from Conor O' Riordan to see them leading 2-9 to 0-1 by the ned of the third Quarter. To their credit Watergrasshill kept battling but, with the aid of goals from Niall Buckley and Conor O' Riordan, Ballyhea raced ahead to win on the final scoreline of 4-15 to 2-3 to gather their first Minor County Championship Title. Monday 29th October | County Minor "A" Championship Final Ballyhea 1-6 WaterGrasshill 1-6 @ Pairc Ui Rinn Just when it seemed that the coveted County Minor Hurling Championship title was on its way to Ballyhea for the first time a point in injury time earned Watergrasshill a replay. To be fair on the day a draw was a fair result. Ballyhea started brightly and led 0-2 to 0-0 after 10 mins with points from Conor O' Riordan and Barry Coleman. But points for the East Cork lads in the 11, 13 and 16 mins put them ahead and when they goaled in the 20 min ballyhea were in big trouble. Maurice O' Sullivan pointed a free in the 26 min but we still trailed 1-4 to 0-3 at the break. Ballyhea came out all guns blazing in the 2nd half, and within a minute were awarded a pen when Edward Rea was fouled, but Tim Shanahans shot was saved well by the Watergrasshill keeper. Watergrasshill added another point to go 5 clear, Timmy Shanahan pulled 1 back in the 36 min. Conor O' Riordan had a shot saved in the 40 min before he pointed 2 mins later. Tim Shanahan pointed in the 48 min to put just 2 points between the sides, Maurice O' Sullivan broke through in the 51 min only to see the Watergrasshill keeper pull off a magnificent save. 3 mins later though Maurice made no mistake to put Ballyhea in the lead which they held until the dying seconds. Sunday 21st October | County Minor "A" Championship Semi-Final Ballyhea 2-12 Valley Rovers 1-14 (after extra-time) @ Midleton In a dramatic County semi-final Ballyhea overcame Valley Rovers after 1 and a half hours of intense hurling at Midleton. A late point from team captain Timmy Shanahan sent Ballyhea through to the Minor A Hurling County Final after a 5 year gap. The first half was evenly contested, but Ballyhea were to rue a number of bad wides when the Inishannon lads goaled in the 21st minute. This goal separated the sides at half-time 1-5 to 0-5. Maurice O' Sullivan had an early point in the second half but Rovers maintained their 3 point lead up to closing stages despite the best efforts of Barry Coleman, Owen O' Sullivan and John O' Riordan. It seemed Ballyhea had lost their chance when Maurice O' Sullivan broke through but Rovers keeper brought off a brilliant save. Then with 1 minute remaining Ballyhea were awarded a 21 yard free and team captain Timmy Shanahan stepped up and crashed the sliotar to net to send the game to extra time. Once again Valley Rovers gained the upper hand and led 1-13 to 1-10 at half-time in extra time. 2 mins into the second period came the crucial goal when Maurice O' Sullivans effort somehow ended up in the net. Saturday 13th October | North Cork Minor "A" Hurling League Final Ballyhea 3-6 Mallow 2-5 @ Castletownroche With the Championship Title already won, the Minor League Title was added on Saturday after an entertaining clash with Mallow. Ballhea got off to a great start with points from Timmy Shanahan, Conor O' Riordan and Sean Coleman to lead 0-3 to 0-0 after 12 mins. But goals for Mallow in the 14th and 16th minutes followed by 2 points put them 5 points clear. Nial Buckley pointed for Ballyhea in the 20th minute and then with 2 minutes remaining in the first half Ballyhea worked through for a well taken Barry Coleman goal, to leave just a point between the sides at half time (2-2 to 1-4). Maurice O' Sullivan had a pointed free in the 39th min, but Mallow went ahead with a fine point a minute later. At this stage the game was being played at championship fever. Mallow added another point in the 50th minute to go ahead again. Then with 6 minutes remaining young Stephen O' Sullivan took off on a solo run before parting to brother Maurice who billowed the net from close range. Mallow pointed a free a minute later to put the bare minimum between the sides again. But in the dying seconds an excellent sideline cut by Liam O' Connor found Edward Rea who made no mistake in goaling to secure victory for Ballyhea. This is Ballyhea's 4th North Cork Minor League Title having previously won in 1987, 1996 & 1998. After the game Tom Crowley Vice-Chairman of the North Cork Board presented the cup to "the Heas" captain Timmy Shanahan, to crown a great year at North Cork level for our U-16 and Minor hurlers, having both completed the League & Championship double. Sunday 30th September | Minor A Hurling County 1/4 Final Ballyhea 4-8 Iniscarra 3-6 @ Banteer Played in very wet conditions our Minor Hurlers advanced to the County Semi-Final with this 5 point victory over Iniscarra at Banteer last Sunday. Ballyhea got off to a dream start with a well taken Cian Ryan goal after 4 minutes. This was followed by further goals from Maurice O' Sullivan in the 10 min and Conor O' Riordan in the 14th min to put us 3-1 to 0-3 ahead after 15 mins. and when Maurice O' Sullivan goaled again in the 24th min he stretched our lead to 9 points 4-1 to 0-4. But then Iniscarra bounced back with 2 goals and a point to leave just 2 points between the sides 4-1 to 2-5 at half-time. As the rain lashed down the second half was very closely contested with John O' Riordan, Michael Morrissey and Kieran O' Leary excelling the mid cork lads found it hard to break down our defence, but Cork Minor Diarmuid O' Riordan had a well taken goal in the 45th min to bring them level 3-5 to 4-2. But a succession of points from Maurice O' Sullivan (3) and Sean Coleman (2) put us into a 5 point lead with 2 mins to go, our passage to the semi-final was safely booked. Tuesday 14th August | Minor "A" Hurling Championship Final Replay Ballyhea 2-3 Mallow 1-3 @ Buttevant We retained the North Cork Minor A Hurling title last Tuesday night at buttevant with a nail biting 3 point victory over Mallow. Played in very wet conditions, we adapted well early on. After 10 mins, Maurice O' Sullivan met Conor O' Riordans cross with an unstopable overhead strike for a brilliant Ballyhea Goal. By half-time we still led by a goal 1-2 to 0-2, this was thanks mainly to one outstanding save by Danny O Donoghue in the Ballyhea Goal. The second half was only a minute old when Mallow had the ball in our net for an equalising goal. Both sides exchanged points before young Edward Rea pounced for a goal of sheer class worthy of winning any game with 8 mins to go. The final minutes were played at a frantic pace but the Ballyhea defence stood firm to record our ninth North Cork Minor Hurling Title. Tuesday 7th August | Minor "A" Hurling Championship Final Ballyhea 0-11 Mallow 2-5 @ Buttevant Match Report After a tense encounter our minors drew with Mallow in the North Cork Final with Mallow snatching a late goal in injury time to force a replay. Ballyhea led 0-5 to 0-2 at half-time but by the 43 min Mallow had gone ahead 1-4 to 0-6, conor o riordan scoring the Ballyhea point. Ballyhea hit a purple patch in the final quarter with points from Maurice O' Sullivan (4 frees) and Sean Coleman to put us 3 points clear (0-11 to 1-5) entering injury time and then came Mallows late goal.
